Dr. Piatt is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Learning Health Sciences at the University of Michigan Medical School. She also holds a joint appointment as a Professor of Health Behavior and Health Equity at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. Dr. Piatt has specific training and expertise in implementing, designing, and evaluating efforts aimed at improving health systems and health care delivery for high-burdened populations with diabetes. The underlying theme of her academic career is to improve health equity for people with diabetes, particularly in minoritized populations, by improving prevention and treatment efforts in health system and community settings, using multi-modal, transdisciplinary research methods.

Dr. Piatt is nationally and internationally recognized for both her research on diabetes health equity and as an Implementation Scientist focused on implementing evidence-based solutions into practice and policy. She leads and contributes to multiple research teams that design and evaluate interventions in the primary and secondary prevention of diabetes and its complications, including implementation and evaluation of self-management support interventions in underserved communities, federally qualified health centers, community organizations, and primary care.

In addition to research, Dr. Piatt serves(d) on institutional, national, and international diabetes committees, including serving as the Co-Director of the Michigan Center for Diabetes Translational Research (NIDDK P30), Course Director for the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Advanced Post Graduate Course, a member of the ADA Scientific Sessions Planning Committee, the ADA Nationwide Grant Review committee, an International Diabetes Federation grant review committee, and as the President of the Behavioral Research in Diabetes Group Exchange. In addition to diabetes-specific service, Dr. Piatt serves as the Director of the Health Infrastructures and Learning Systems graduate degree programs and is the Co-Director of the Michigan Embedded LHS Scientist Training and Research (MEL-STaR) Center (AHRQ P30). She actively mentors predoctoral and postdoctoral trainees in diabetes translational research and implementation science.
