About
Dr. Callie Drohan is a Clinical Instructor in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Michigan. She received her undergraduate degree from The Ohio State University and completed her medical degree and Internal Medicine residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, where she also served as Chief Resident. She then completed fellowship training in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Michigan, where she served as Chief Fellow. She completed a Master’s degree in Health and Health Care Research at the University of Michigan in 2026.
Dr. Drohan joined the Michigan Medicine faculty in 2025, where she provides expert care for patients with respiratory failure, sepsis, and complex critical illness in the Medical Intensive Care Unit, in addition to outpatient pulmonary care in the Taubman Pulmonary Clinic.
Her research focuses on improving outcomes for patients with sepsis and acute respiratory failure, including acute respiratory distress syndrome. She leads translational studies investigating how gut translocation of microbial products contributes to systemic inflammation, organ injury, and clinical outcomes. Her long-term goal is to identify targetable biological pathways that can inform future therapies for patients with critical illness.

Research Overview
Dr. Drohan’s research interests include sepsis, acute respiratory failure, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and mechanisms of organ injury during critical illness. Her work focuses on gut barrier dysfunction, microbial translocation, circulating bacterial DNA, and microbiome-host interactions as biologic pathways linking critical illness to systemic inflammation, lung injury, and clinical outcomes. She is particularly interested in identifying biomarkers and targetable mechanisms that may inform future therapies for patients with sepsis and critical illness.
