As a clinician-educator and the consultant (subject-matter expert/leader) in my specialty within the Air Force, my contributions over the last 15 years have primarily focused on resource management and optimization for our Air Force clinics, and on mentoring/advising young military physicians how to go about matching into and succeeding in our field. Additionally, I stood up a new rotation in radiation oncology for medical students through Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine where I have served as adjunct faculty and advisor. During that time, I also introduced many internal medicine residents to oncology and assisted them with research projects and career advice along the way. Furthermore, I served as head editor for three editions of “Radiation Oncology—A Question-Based Review,” a first-of-its-kind question-answer study aid for trainees in our field. Finally, as chief of our cancer center’s radiation oncology clinic, and later as cancer center director, I focused my efforts on process improvements that enhanced our clinic’s capabilities, allowing for safer and more efficacious treatments of medically inoperable patients (e.g. upgrading our equipment, implementing a stereotactic radiation program, expanding access to care for VA patients).

At the University of Michigan, I was tasked with initiating and leading the department’s first Benign Disease Program/Functional Disorders Clinic and with expanding the indications for radiation, including low-dose radiation for inflammatory muskuloskeletal conditions. I worked diligintly with intra- and extra-departmental stakeholders (e.g. dosimetry, physics, nursing, scheduling/billing/finance offices, IT and media departments) to ensure the creation of a robust and sustainable program from initial patient scheduling through the post-treatment follow-ups. Additionally, we devised a phantom-based planning approach for hand and knee osteoarthritis patients in order to simplify the work-flow and avoid scheduling conflicts with our cancer patients.
