Sachin Kheterpal, M.D., MBA, appointed chair of Department of Anesthesiology

Sachin Kheterpal, M.D., MBA, has been appointed chair of the Department of Anesthesiology and the Robert B. Sweet Endowed Professor of Anesthesiology in the Medical School, effective July 1, 2025.

Kheterpal currently is the Kevin K. Tremper Professor of Anesthesiology and associate dean for research information technology in the Medical School. He is associate chair for strategy and technology in the Department of Anesthesiology and previously served as associate chair of clinical affairs. A 2022 inductee of the National Academy of Medicine, his career centers on leveraging information technology to enhance patient care, quality improvement, research, and education. 

Since 2004, Kheterpal has integrated information technology, data analytics, and collaboration expertise to advance the tripartite mission as an academic anesthesiologist. He is nationally recognized for his work in perioperative large dataset research, data science, and novel clinical trials. He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed articles and served as principal investigator (PI) or co-PI of more than $75 million of sponsored grants and contracts.

Kheterpal is a transplant anesthesiologist, supports numerous emerging scholars as a primary mentor, and serves as the PI for several PCORI- and NIH-funded multicenter trials and the department’s NIH T32 physician-scientist training program. He is founder and executive director of the Multicenter Perioperative Outcomes Group (MPOG), a consortium of more than 70 health systems and 150 hospitals across the U.S., Canada, Middle East, and Europe. 

Outside the field of anesthesiology, Kheterpal served as founding co-director of U-M’s Precision Health Initiative. He also was named to President Obama’s Precision Medicine Initiative Working Group, the NIH All of Us Advisory Panel, NIH Council of Councils, and the NIH Novel and Exceptional Technology and Research Advisory Committee (NExTRAC).

Kheterpal earned his Bachelor of Science, Doctor of Medicine, and Master of Business Administration degrees from the University of Michigan, where he also completed his anesthesiology residency and transplant anesthesia fellowship. Before entering academia, he co-founded a national electronic health record software company which was acquired by General Electric, and he served as GE’s global general manager of product marketing, development and strategy for clinical information systems.
