Join our expanding Academic Primary Care faculty. This position will provide direct patient care in an outpatient setting with teaching opportunities. There are also opportunities to engage in population management and quality/safety activities. Prior training or clinical experience in an academic teaching environment is preferred.

The Division of General Medicine is the largest division within the Department of Internal Medicine, University of Michigan Medical School, with over 175 faculty and over 175,000 primary care patient visits annually. The Division is committed to transforming primary care delivery to provide high value, accessible and patient-centered care; eliminating healthcare disparities; enhancing the engagement and clinical experience of our faculty; supporting innovative research; enhancing medical student and resident education in primary care; and developing the next generation of general medicine clinicians, researchers and leaders. Required Qualifications

Applicant must hold an MD or DO degree and postgraduate clinical training. They should hold or have the ability to obtain the appropriate medical license in the State of Michigan as well as be board certified or board eligible in Internal Medicine. Candidates should be able to collaborate effectively with other clinicians. Good oral and written communication skills are essential. Evidence of clinical competence and didactic teaching is expected. Prior training or clinical experience at a major academic medical center is preferred.

The Department of Internal Medicine seeks a nationally recognized, dynamic, and visionary leader to become its next division chief of General Medicine. The Division of General Medicine was founded in 1976. Since that time, the division has grown to over 160 faculty and has become nationally recognized for an exemplary record of patient care, research, education and training. Mission & History

The Division of General Medicine at the University of Michigan was formally established in 1976 and has grown into one of the nation's leading academic general internal medicine divisions. The division expanded from a small faculty group with modest research activity into a nationally recognized division distinguished by excellence in clinical care, research, education, and health policy.  Our mission is to harness our skills and talents to deliver exceptional primary care for our patients and community, pursue research and innovations that transform care delivery and change lives, develop the next generation of leaders in research and clinical care, and provide a space for our faculty and staff to thrive.

The division has served as the home for numerous influential programs and innovations with national reach, including the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars Program, the National Clinician Scholars Program, the VA Center for Clinical Management ResearchValue-Based Insurance Design (V-BID), and the Cancer Surveillance and Outcomes Research Team (CanSORT). The Division of General Medicine provides general and preventive medicine for adults and children (through medicine-pediatrics trained faculty) at eleven clinical sites across Ann Arbor, Brighton, Canton, Northville and the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System. We treat patients in all aspects of their health, including arthritis, asthma, diabetes, hypertension, gastroenterological diseases, infectious diseases and heart disease, and provide preventive care such as immunizations, health counselling, and sports physicals. Our division is home to innovative programs for weight management, opioid use disorder treatment, and sports medicine.  We are also proud of our focus on supporting the professional engagement and wellbeing of our clinical faculty through dedicated mentoring programs and the Gradwohl Art of Primary Care.

Education

The Division of General Medicine is committed to providing superior and comprehensive education and training to students, residents and fellows, in the classroom and in our clinics. All internal medicine and medicine-pediatric residents have clinical rotations at one of our teaching sites. Our goal is to prepare all learners to become outstanding physicians and leaders in their fields. In addition, many of our faculty members help guide medical student education, holding leadership positions at the U-M Medical School, U-M Internal Medicine Residency Program and U-M Institute for Healthcare Policy & Innovation National Clinician Scholars Program.

Research

The Division of General Medicine is home to faculty with innovative and diverse research interests. Our faculty are leading research programs to address some of the biggest challenges in general internal medicine and have a robust portfolio of extramurally funded research spanning topics in health and healthcare disparities, clinical decision-making and behavior science, health economics, healthcare quality, safety and value, implementation science and quality improvement, primary care transformation, and health services research related to aging, pain management, cardiometabolic and vascular disease, obesity, cancer and women’s health.  Among our accomplished general medicine faculty, five are members of ASCI, three of AAP, and six are members of the National Academy of Medicine. Three of our faculty have received the SGIM John M. Eisenberg National Award for Career Achievement in Research, and many have received local and national recognitions for mentorship and teaching. Seven of our faculty hold endowed professorships. Several General Medicine faculty members have secondary appointments in other departments, including School of Public Health, Learning Health Sciences, and Institute for Social Research, thereby fostering collaborations and enabling opportunities for funded research studies. In the 2025 fiscal year, the division received over $9 million in federal, industry, and foundation funding to support our research activities.

Key Responsibilities and Desired Outcomes

The division chief of General Medicine will focus on the following:

  • Develop and execute a vision that advances clinical excellence, fosters innovation, and responds to the changing needs of patients, faculty, leaners, and the health system.

  • Partner with Department and Ambulatory Care leadership to create and sustain an environment that enables faculty and leaners to thrive in clinical care, education, and   scholarly or academic activities.

  • Ensure excellence in patient care; identify and grow new clinical programs and sites of service that contribute to the success of the University’s clinical mission.

  • Identify and develop areas of opportunity in health services and health policy research that will enhance the academic impact and national reputation of the Division of General Medicine, including through recruitment of research-focused faculty and collaborative efforts across the Medical School.

  • Support the career development and wellbeing of trainees and faculty.

  • Manage and mentor faculty members, supporting their professional growth and fostering a culture of clinical and academic excellence. This includes conducting performance evaluations, setting goals, and promoting career development as well as managing opportunities for improvement when challenges arise.

  • Recruit and retain faculty to sufficiently meet the demand of sustaining a large, complex service across multiple sites.

  • Engage the medical, nursing and senior administrative staff in measuring, monitoring and reporting data and processes to continuously improve clinical care and outcomes.

  • Work collaboratively with leaders of education and training programs, UME and GME, to meet the high standards expected at the University of Michigan.

  • Oversee Division operations, including fiscal management, resource allocation, and capacity planning. Ensure alignment with institutional goals and maintain financial sustainability.

  • Partner with the Michigan Medicine Office of Development to build philanthropic support for divisional faculty and research activities.

Experiences and Professional Qualifications

The successful candidate is expected to be an M.D. or an M.D./Ph.D. with board certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Extensive academic, research, administrative, and clinical experience is valued. A strong track record of scholarly activity is required, and a track record of extramural funding is highly desirable. Enthusiasm for leading excellence in the tripartite missions of clinical care, research, and education is essential. Candidates should be, or be qualified to be, licensed in the State of Michigan. The successful candidate should have scholarly credentials appropriate to be proposed for appointment as Associate Professor or Professor of Medicine at the University of Michigan.
