Michigan Medicine Learning Health System Summit: Advancing a System-Wide Culture of Continuous Learning

Michigan Medicine is poised to become the nation’s premier academic Learning Health System (LHS) — a health system in which clinical care, research, education, and operations are intentionally connected to create a continuous cycle of learning and improvement. In an LHS, data generated through routine care are transformed into actionable knowledge that is rapidly applied to practice, and the results are measured to drive ongoing improvement in patient outcomes, experiences, and health system performance. 

Few institutions possess the combination of assets needed to lead this transition. Michigan Medicine is home to the nation’s only Department of Learning Health Sciences, world-class data and analytics capabilities, nationally recognized expertise quality and safety, and a culture of innovation that spans clinical care, research, and education. Together, these strengths create an unparalleled opportunity to accelerate learning, improve care delivery, and generate evidence that can benefit patients both locally and globally.

The Michigan Medicine Learning Health System Summit will bring together leaders, clinicians, researchers, educators, staff, and learners from across the organization to explore what it will take to fully realize the vision. Through presentations, panels, and collaborative discussion, participants will learn from successful LHS initiatives already underway across Michigan Medicine and examine how these efforts can be scaled, connected and sustained across the broader enterprise.

The summit will focus on key questions that will define Michigan Medicine’s future as an LHS:

• How can we better leverage our data, technology, and expertise to accelerate improvement?
• How can we create stronger connections between clinical practice and research?
• What infrastructure, partnerships, and incentives are needed to support continuous learning?
• What cultural shifts are required to make learning an expected and integrated part of everyday care delivery?
