Talk Title: Quality Mental Health Care for All

Only one-third of Americans with psychiatric disorders receive adequate treatment, underscoring the urgent need to expand access to care. Psychiatric nurse practitioners and other advanced practice professionals (APPs) can help address this gap, but inconsistent training and supervision raise concerns about quality. The American Psychiatric Association is considering developing national standards for clinical roles, supervision, and psychiatrist leadership. At Johns Hopkins, a potential psychiatric nurse practitioner fellowship would provide more rigorous training and mentorship. The goal is a collaborative system that improves access, ensures quality, and allows psychiatrists to focus on more complex patients.

About the John F. Greden, M.D., Scholar in Residence Lecture:

On September 1, 2007, Dr. John Greden stepped down as Chair of the Department of Psychiatry after serving in this capacity for over 22 years. A widely respected leader, Dr. Greden led this Department with consummate vision and commitment since 1985. In doing so, he maintained and expanded Michigan’s position at the forefront of academic psychiatry.

Dr. Greden's influence goes far beyond the prestige that he brought to the Department of Psychiatry. Just as important to his legacy are Dr. Greden's very personal contributions as an educator and mentor for trainees and young faculty, and his unwavering commitment to improving our understanding of mood disorders and reducing the stigma associated with them.

To honor Dr. Greden for his exceptional contributions as Chair, the Department of Psychiatry established The John F. Greden, M.D., Scholar in Residence Program at the University of Michigan Department of Psychiatry. By establishing this program in Dr. Greden’s name, we committed to providing those whose lives he affected with the opportunity to pay tribute to his leadership, mentorship, and friendship. Numerous colleagues, mentees, patients and friends joined us in honoring Dr. Greden with contributions to this endowment fund.

The Greden Scholar in Residence Program allows us to identify and select an outstanding psychiatric investigator each year who joins us in residence at the U-M for one week to meet with faculty, trainees, and expand and extend our focus on the study and treatment of mental illness, particularly depression and other mood disorders.
