Dr. Njira Lugogo Named Healthcare Hero by Crain's Detroit Business

Njira Lugogo, MD, clinical professor of internal medicine in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, was recently named one of Crain’s Detroit Business’s 2026 Healthcare Heroes for reshaping how asthma is understood, treated, and diagnosed.

Dr. Lugogo’s work focuses on new therapies and management for severe asthma, obesity and asthma, and biomarkers and asthma phenotyping. As Director of the Michigan Medicine Asthma Program, and Principal Investigator of the Michigan site for the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) PrecISE network - a precision medicine network focused on severe and exacerbating asthma - Dr. Lugogo participates in multiple clinical trials on biological indicators of asthma, how it ties into the presentation of the disease, and how to target patients more precisely for better outcomes. Dr. Lugogo also serves as Medical Director of both the Michigan Clinical Research Unit and statewide quality improvement initiative, Inspiring Health Advances in Lung Care (INHALE), where she is committed to advancing quality and performance of asthma and COPD care, working to ensure all individuals have access to effective, equitable treatment.

Dr. Lugogo was recognized among 16 other honorees nominated by their peers for finding new ways to improve care to new heights and discover innovations.
