AI Shows Promise in Detecting Hard-To-Spot Microvascular Disease

Dr. Venkatesh Murthy is at the center of a new breakthrough in cardiovascular research, leading a team that is using artificial intelligence to improve how doctors detect microvascular heart disease—a condition that often goes unnoticed but can significantly increase the risk of heart attacks. 

In a recent WEMU report, Dr. Murthy is identified as the lead investigator behind the development of an AI model at the University of Michigan that can analyze routine electrocardiogram (EKG) data to uncover signs of this hard-to-diagnose condition. His role goes beyond oversight; he is a key voice shaping how the technology is understood and applied in clinical settings. 

Murthy emphasizes that AI has the potential to transform everyday medical practice. He notes that tools like this could help physicians detect diseases earlier and at a lower cost, making advanced cardiac care more accessible to a wider range of patients. As he explains, emerging technologies could fundamentally change how doctors manage patient care on a daily basis. 

At the same time, Murthy highlights a balanced approach to innovation. He stresses that while AI offers powerful diagnostic support, it is not a replacement for physicians. Instead, it should enhance clinical decision-making while maintaining strong doctor-patient relationships and ensuring safeguards are in place if the technology underperforms in certain cases.
