The University of Michigan Medical School Office of Faculty Development team is dedicated to empowering and enriching the careers of faculty and our regional partner physicians and healthcare providers. We are offering a series of workshops on various topics that encompass clinical best practices and developmental skills.

Aligned with institutional priorities and strategies such as enhanced well-being, leadership development and belonging, the Office collaborates closely with Medical School leadership, key regional partner stakeholders and other Michigan Medicine Offices to ensure its offerings are relevant and timely.

“What These Gray Hairs Have Taught Me" with President Dr. Ronald Grifka

Across decades of clinical practice in several health systems, leadership challenges, unexpected pivots, and the relentless evolution of modern medicine, Dr. Ronald Grifka, President of University of Michigan Health-West has collected something far more valuable than titles: perspective. In this candid, story driven session, he shares the lessons that only experience—and yes, a few gray hairs—can teach. Throughout these pursuits, he earned a degree from U.H.K. - the “University of Hard Knocks”.

In this workshop, participants learn how to navigate high stakes, emotionally charged conversations with more confidence and clarity. This session breaks down what happens in our brains when dialogue gets tough, how to stay grounded when stakes rise, and how to speak honestly without triggering defensiveness.

Clinical Funds Flow: Understanding the Financial Relationship Between the Medical School and Health System

This essential workshop provides an overview of the financial structure that connects the Medical School and Health System through clinical funds flows. Participants will learn how clinician productivity and specialties translate into financial support, with a focus on the RVU model, Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs), and Professional Services Agreements (PSAs).
