Dr. Meredith Barrett is an Assistant Surgeon of Transplant Surgery at the University of Michigan. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Kent State in 2008, and then matriculated through a 6-year premed-medical school program at Northeast Ohio Medical University, graduating in 2012. She completed her residency training in general surgery at the University of Michigan in 2019. Notably during her training, she won the Hilary Sanfey Outstanding Resident Award in 2017, a national award given to one surgery resident annually who demonstrates support of women in surgery and the potential to be a leader in surgery nationally.
Dr. Barrett continued her post-residency training at Michigan completing a two-year fellowship in abdominal transplantation where she honed her technical skills in kidney, pancreas, and liver transplantation. Her clinical practice currently includes abdominal transplantation surgery (adult and pediatric), dialysis access surgery and general surgery.
In addition to transplantation and surgical education, Dr. Barrett is committed to resident and faculty wellness. She founded the Women in Surgery program at the University of Michigan and encourages mental health awareness and work-life balance. Outside of the operating room, Dr. Barrett enjoys being with her fiancé Ben, his son Julian, their daughter Etta and the two furry members of the family-Suzie and Cora. She also enjoys spending time outdoors, particularly running. She has completed ten marathons and multiple other road races.
