Making a Big Impact on a Microscopic Scale
Explore the mission and daily drive to make new discoveries in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Michigan.
The Microbiology and Immunology Department at the University of Michigan Medical School strives to conduct cutting-edge basic and translational research, provide outstanding instruction and mentorship and to enrich the institution and the scientific community through our service. This tripartite mission is at the heart of all that we do. We also seek to be an inclusive and diverse community that fosters the best opportunities for scholarship and discovery in each of us.
We conduct research in microbial pathogenesis and immunology using the tools of:
- Molecular biology
- Genetic screens
- Cell culture
- Models of infection
- Molecular imaging
- Transgenic animals
- Bioinformatics
We also have deep expertise in microbiome studies and computational biology.
In M&I, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows are mentored by top-notch principal investigators, testing biological hypotheses that have the potential to translate into medical treatments and cures. Laboratory training is supplemented with rigorous coursework, seminar series, journal clubs and the presentation of research findings at national meetings.
Our faculty members train PhD, Master's and undergraduate students from the medical, dental and allied health fields.
Within U-M, they serve to help conduct the work of the Medical School and nationally, they are engaged with their respective professional organizations and on advisory boards of government panels. M&I faculty participate in the peer review of manuscripts and grant applications for journals and funding agencies.
Faculty, postdocs, doctoral and graduate students, undergraduates, research staff, and the administrative support staff all work together to further our mission of conducting medical and scientific research, training the next generation of scientists, teaching the university’s student body, and serving the Medical School, the scientific community and the public.
