Commencement ceremonies are, by design, full of Pomp and Circumstance. There are speeches to deliver and diplomas to dispense. And, of course, there is an air of celebration and accomplishment for the graduates and their families and friends. The 2024 Medical School M.D. graduation ceremony had all of this, as well as an added layer of humor when William Flanary, M.D., a prolific writer of both medicine and comedy, delivered the Commencement address May 10 in Hill Auditorium.

An ophthalmologist and beloved comedian shares his thoughts on the field to aspiring clinicians.

Today on The Fundamentals, our guest is Dr. Michelle Kahlenberg, an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine and Dermatology, the Giles Bole and Dorothy Mulkey Research Professor of Rheumatology and the Vice Chair for Basic and Translational Research in Internal Medicine. Her clinical work is centered on the care of patients with lupus, including those with refractory skin disease. In addition to running her lab, she's an active member of the Immunology Training Program and has received national recognition for her research.

When M4 Ahmad Hider crosses the stage at Hill Auditorium this week to receive his diploma and officially become Dr. Hider, like his fellow graduates he is excited about the future that awaits him in residency and beyond. As Hider becomes more fully immersed in the health care system, however, he also feels that many things need fixing. So, when he begins a residency in general surgery at University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, he is preparing to for a dual role — becoming the best surgeon he can, and improving health care for patients.

The Clinical Trials Support Office (CTSO) is pleased to announce that Mio Nakamura, MD, MS, Clinical Assistant Professor, Dermatology, has been appointed as the new Associate Medical Director of the Michigan Clinical Trials Support Unit (M-CTSU) and Michigan Clinical Research Unit (MCRU). Dr. Nakamura’s appointment will begin July 1, 2024, and is a 2-year term.

Paul Picton, M.B., Ch.B., MRCP, FRCA, has been appointed interim chair of the Department of Anesthesiology in the Medical School, effective May 1. The provost has provided interim approval of his appointment, and it will be reported at the May Board of Regents meeting

Four with Medical School ties are among 12 University of Michigan faculty and staff members recognized by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) as 2023 fellows in recognition of their extraordinary achievements.

The Medical School will showcase ongoing efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by hosting activities that coincide with Earth Day on April 22, as well as Earth Week from April 22-26.

Eric S. Holmboe, M.D., president and chief executive officer for Intealth, will deliver the James O. Woolliscroft, M.D. Endowed Lecture in Medical Education from 5-6 p.m. on April 30 in the Danto Auditorium of the Frankel Cardiovascular Center. The Grand Rounds presentation is open to the entire Michigan Medicine community, as well as faculty, staff and learners from the U-M’s other health sciences schools

There are many intriguing aspects to the honor of a faculty member holding a named professorship in the University of Michigan Medical School: the excitement of receiving one of the highest honors the U-M can bestow on a faculty member; an understanding of the rich history of the person(s) for whom their professorship is named; and the flexibility of what the professorship allows the holders to do during their career. On April 1, the Medical School hosted a celebration of faculty who were appointed to named professorships in 2023.

Six members of the University of Michigan community were inducted into the National Academies of Practice (NAP) as Distinguished Fellows in a ceremony held on March 16, 2024 in Jacksonville, Florida as part of the Annual NAP Meeting and Forum. The group includes faculty and clinicians from the University of Michigan, University of Michigan-Flint and Michigan Medicine.
