Commencement ceremonies are, by design, full of Pomp and Circumstance. There are speeches to deliver and diplomas to dispense. And, of course, there is an air of celebration and accomplishment for the graduates and their families and friends. The 2024 Medical School M.D. graduation ceremony had all of this, as well as an added layer of humor when William Flanary, M.D., a prolific writer of both medicine and comedy, delivered the Commencement address May 10 in Hill Auditorium.

Today on The Fundamentals is Dr. Maria Castro, the R.C. Schneider collegiate professor of neurosurgery, and a professor of cell and developmental biology at the University of Michigan Medical School. Her research program aims to develop immunotherapies for primary and metastatic brain cancer, studying basic immune biology mechanisms leading to clinical implementation. She has been inducted into the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences, the Latin American Academy of Sciences, and the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering College of Fellows. She has won numerous awards for her contributions to basic science and cancer research and is a diversity ambassador for the Cancer Biology Graduate Training Program.

When M4 Ahmad Hider crosses the stage at Hill Auditorium this week to receive his diploma and officially become Dr. Hider, like his fellow graduates he is excited about the future that awaits him in residency and beyond. As Hider becomes more fully immersed in the health care system, however, he also feels that many things need fixing. So, when he begins a residency in general surgery at University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, he is preparing to for a dual role — becoming the best surgeon he can, and improving health care for patients.

There are many intriguing aspects to the honor of a faculty member holding a named professorship in the University of Michigan Medical School: the excitement of receiving one of the highest honors the U-M can bestow on a faculty member; an understanding of the rich history of the person(s) for whom their professorship is named; and the flexibility of what the professorship allows the holders to do during their career. On April 1, the Medical School hosted a celebration of faculty who were appointed to named professorships in 2023.

Six members of the University of Michigan community were inducted into the National Academies of Practice (NAP) as Distinguished Fellows in a ceremony held on March 16, 2024 in Jacksonville, Florida as part of the Annual NAP Meeting and Forum. The group includes faculty and clinicians from the University of Michigan, University of Michigan-Flint and Michigan Medicine.
