Dr. Michele Carney is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics. She embarked on her faculty journey in 2004 after completing a pediatric residency at Children’s Hospital of Michigan, followed by a fellowship in pediatric emergency medicine at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. Dr. Carney distinguished herself as the Program Director for the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship from 2013 to 2024, demonstrating her commitment to medical education and training.
Throughout her career, Dr. Carney has actively contributed to her department and institution by serving on numerous committees. She currently champions wellness initiatives as a Wellness Advocate and actively participates in the COMPASS group, a testament to her dedication to fostering a supportive work environment. Nationally, she is recognized for her contributions as a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Dr. Carney’s academic interests are diverse and impactful. She focuses on positive leadership and advocacy, emphasizing the importance of constructive guidance in medical settings. Additionally, she is passionate about firearm safety, advocating for measures to protect children and communities. An innovator at heart, Dr. Carney is also involved in the development of medical devices and applications, contributing to advancements in pediatric care and emergency medicine.

Dr. Carney's academic focus is in medical education, specifically curriculum development and assessment. In addition, she has developed a prototype device to increase success of neonatal lumbar punctures. She has received grants from Fast Forward Medical Innovation’s Kickstart Award and Michigan Medicine’s Fostering Innovation Grants (FIG) program.
