Dr. Weber is a Clinical Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Michigan and served as Chief Research Officer at Hurley Medical Center from 2009-12. He is an internationally recognized authority on the cardiac effects of cocaine abuse, and has authored over 120 peer-reviewed manuscripts, abstracts, and textbook chapters. His noteworthy findings, published in the The New England Journal of Medicine, Circulation, and the Journal of Thrombosis and Thrombolysis were recently implemented into the latest American Heart Association Guidelines. He has chaired steering committees at numerous national and international scientific assemblies, and continues to serve as a manuscript editor and editorial consultant for several cardiology and emergency medicine scientific journals.
In the research arena, Dr. Weber has been a recipient of extramural funding from agencies including the Centers for Disease Control, the National Institutes of Health, and the National Institute on Drug Abuse. In addition, he has won noteworthy state and national teaching and research awards. In 2001, he was recognized as the Top Consultant by the American College of Emergency Physicians. He has served on the scientific advisory boards for Sanofi-Aventis, Scios, Genentech, Biosite Diagnostics, Centocor, Schering-Plough, Pfizer, Bristol-Meyers-Squibb, Eli Lilly, and Guilford Pharmaceuticals.
Dr. Weber has noteworthy accomplishments as an educator. He has served as a board examiner for the American Board of Emergency Medicine. In 2001, he was awarded the Alpha Omega Alpha Clinical Faculty Award. In addition, he is a five-time recipient of the Golden Apple Teaching Award from the University of Michigan. His vision of utilizing the media as an educational tool has also earned him numerous broadcast journalism credits. He has written 17 medical textbook chapters, and is the author of a forthcoming book, “Playing God on No Sleep”. Dr. Weber was the subject of an Emmy nominated health-related documentary and his broadcast biography includes over 100 health-care media appearances, including TLC’s “Trauma: Life in the ER, “The Discovery Channel”, as well as the daytime syndicate, “The Doctors”. Most recently, he appeared in the award-winning documentary film “Doctored”. In addition, Dr. Weber, works directly with the Department of Defense to train the Special Operations Combat Medics (SOCM) regarding combat medic training for the Navy SARC, SEAL teams, and SWCC.
Last, Dr. Weber has made substantial contributions in both professional sports and state government. He served as the Vice-Chair of the World Boxing Council Medical Commission and has worked as a medical consultant for the Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC). He has served as a ringside physician for USA Boxing since 2003, and has been a consultant and personal physician for numerous World Champions. In 2009, he was appointed by Governor Granholm as a State Commissioner in the Department of Energy, Labor and Economic Growth, and re-appointed by Governor Snyder as Chairman of the Unarmed Combat Commission within the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs. While serving as the State of Michigan Athletic Commission Chair, Dr. Weber brought several World Championship title bouts to the state, in addition to the Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC). Recreationally, he serves as a professional ski instructor for Vail Resorts, and works with both alpine and adaptive (disabled) skiers.
