Dr. Lowell’s interest in emergency medicine and emergency medical services began during his undergraduate years at Tulane University in New Orleans. While at Tulane, he received EMT certification, and worked for the New Orleans Police Department and East Jefferson Hospital EMS. he also was a founder of Tulane Emergency Medical Services, one of the first student-run on-campus EMS services in the nation. Following his graduation from New York University School of Medicine in 1986, he pursued training in Internal Medicine at the Emory University Affiliated Hospitals from 1986-1989. Following that, he completed additional residency in Emergency Medicine at The University of Cincinnati from 1989-1992. While at Cincinnati, he was Medical Director for two ground-based EMS services – the Mason Volunteer Fire Department, and the Loveland-Symmes Fire Department. he also developed interest in Air Medical Transport, flying on University Air Care as a flight physician.
In 1992, he was recruited to The University of Michigan to assist in the development of an academic Department of Emergency Medicine. During his career, he has been involved in the oversight of ground EMS programs in Southeast Michigan. He is Medical Director of Survival Flight, the air and ground critical care transport program at University of Michigan. As part of these roles, he has reviewed the care of thousands of patients provided by EMT’s, paramedics, and flight nurses. he also remains active clinically, working in the Adult Emergency Department at University of Michigan/Michigan Medicine, overseeing the care provided to patients by medical students, interns, residents, physician assistants, as well as students from several other disciplines.
Dr. Lowell serves on the Michigan Medicine’s Clinical Care Review Committee, and has been a senior examiner for the American Board of Emergency Medicine.
