    Research Overview

    • Studies of the molecular mechanisms underlying inherited forms of retinal degeneration causing vision loss and blindness in affected individuals.
    • Identification of disease genes associated with early and severe forms of retinal degeneration, focusing on genes expressed in the retina and retinal pigment epithelium, and necessary for the function of the light-absorbing rod and cone photoreceptor cells.
    • Analysis of the cellular functions and pathogenic mechanisms associated with retinal degeneration genes using assays of protein function and enzyme activity, and mouse and rat models of human disease.
    • Studies of the impact of disease-associated mutations that disrupt vitamin A metabolism needed for the synthesis and processing of the light-absorbing chromophore 11-cis retinal.
    • Efforts to advance therapeutic intervention in inherited retinal diseases using small molecules and gene-replacement strategies targeting photoreceptor cells and the retinal pigment epithelium.
