  • About

I am a passionate leader and educator. I serve as the medical director of our pediatric intensive care unit (https://www.mottchildren.org/conditions-treatments/pediatric-intensive-…) and the program director for the pediatric critical care medicine fellowship (https://medicine.umich.edu/dept/pediatrics/divisions/pediatric-critical…). My clinical interests include neurotrauma, pediatric burn, point-of-care-ultrasound, and simulation. As a former PICU patient, I focus my clinical care on enhancing the human factors impacted by a patient's stay in the ICU. My clinical contributions have focused on guideline and policy development, implementation, and, using a quality improvement approach, impacting patient care with plan-do-study-act (PDSA) technique. I serve as the chair of our morbidity and mortality committee, whose work has been the model for other program development within the children's hospital. Lastly, in my leadership role as medical director of the pediatric intensive care unit, patient and staff experience and safety is another area of focus. Using a local improvement team, we continue to discover local and systematic problems and find creative solutions so that our goal of no patient or staff harm remains a priority each and every day. In addition, we aim to provide a supportive environment for our faculty and staff through the use of timed debriefs after patient deaths - which I moderate and coordinate.

    Research Overview

My scholarly contributions have focused on the impact of medical education evaluative techniques on the accurate assessment of learners today - specifically fellows in pediatric critical care medicine. While not broadly published as yet, my work is local - focusing on the issues that affect our unit, healthy system, and community. I am the site investigator for the Educators in Pediatric Intensive Care (EPIC) investigators and have been the site investigator for 3 nationally funded multi-centered studies. My master's degree in statistical analysis and my passion for medical education allow me to be a prime candidate to serve as project mentor for pediatric residents and pediatric critical care medicine fellows. I have scholarly interest and contribution in the field of patient safety with my work on diagnostic accuracy in pediatric ICU patients.
