    About

As a physician experienced in both pre-hospital and hospital education on acute stroke care, Dr. Sozener has worked with the INSTINCT research team at the University of Michigan and led past efforts in both qualitative and quantitative interventions and analysis for that study in addition to working with the numerous physicians, nurses, and other staff personnel throughout the entire INSTINCT network. He is currently completing an NIH funded StrokeNet fellowship.

    Research Overview

    • Disparities of stroke care between differing racial and socioeconomic classes. This has been through my involvement as an investigator in the Brain Attack Surveillance in Corpus Christi (BASIC) project, a long-standing population-based stroke study comparing access to stroke care for Mexican Americans and non-Hispanic whites
    • Acute Ischemic Stroke Clinical Trials to advance the field in best care strategies for patients presenting with acute neurological injuries. My clinical trial involvement to date has been in: Neurological Emergencies Treatment trials (NETT); Increasing Stroke Treatment through Interventional Behavior Change Tactics (INSTINCT) trial; Stroke Hyperglycemia Insulin Network Effort (SHINE) trial; StrokeNet Endovascular Therapy Following Imaging Evaluation for Ischemic Stroke (DEFUSE 3); Multi-arm Optimization of Stroke Thrombolysis (MOST) trial; Thrombolysis in Imaging-eligible, Late-window Patients to Assess the Efficacy and Safety of Tenecteplase (TIMELESS) trial; SIREN Influence of Cooling duration on Efficacy in Cardiac Arrest Patients (ICECAP) trial
    • Acute Ischemic Stroke, specifically the strategies to more efficiently diagnose and manage these patients with the goal of improving long-term disability and mortality as a result of neurological injury
    • Medical education research, specifically the study of a learner's transition from undergraduate to graduate medical education
    • Pre-Hospital Medicine, specifically the intersection of prehospital medicine relating to acute neurological injuries as well as bringing technology into the ambulance to assist with more timely and accurate care of these critically ill patients
    • Stroke Systems of Care, specifically researching how academic medical centers can impact stroke care delivery in community hospitals through education
    • Studying clinician involvement in lean facility design to significantly enhance the built environment for new and renovated healthcare facilities to better care for critically ill patients

    A Lifeline for Stroke Patients
Every year, nearly 800,000 Americans experience a stroke, an event that is a leading cause of disability. At Michigan Medicine, the Comprehensive Stroke and Telestroke Programs are designed to meet those needs with urgency, innovation, and compassion, grounded in decades of leadership in emergency medicine.
