After graduating from the University of Leeds, Dr. Ghani completed basic surgical training in Edinburgh followed by urological surgery training in London. He was awarded a Master of Surgery thesis from the University of London for research on percutaneous renal stone surgery. Following completion of sub-specialist training in Endourology at the Stone Unit at Guy’s Hospital, London, Dr. Ghani was awarded The Urology Foundation Scholarship and undertook fellowship training in robotic surgery at the Vattikuti Urology Institute, Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit.
He joined the University of Michigan in 2013 and leads the Endourology program at the Ann Arbor VA Healthcare System. He treats patients with kidney problems: stones, cancer and obstruction. Dr Ghani has authored over 200 peer-reviewed articles, and his research focuses on endoscopic stone surgery and quality improvement. Specifically, he has been advancing a Dusting technique for ureteroscopy and has extramural funding to study laser lithotripsy in the laboratory. He is the Course Director of the annual Developments in Ureteroscopic Stone Treatment (D.U.S.T.) symposium, an international meeting that has exposed hundreds of urologists to advanced ureteroscopy techniques. He is also the Course Director of the American Urological Association annual course, Dust or Bust.
In addition, Dr Ghani serves as the Director of the Michigan Urological Surgery Improvement Collaborative (MUSIC), which is a consortium of 46 urology practices aiming to improve the quality of care for patients with prostate cancer, kidney stones, and kidney cancer. Within MUSIC, he is the principal investigator of two randomized clinical trials assessing patient health-related quality of life and healthcare use after ureteroscopy.
Dr. Ghani has received numerous prizes for his presentations and research from the American Urological Association, Endourological Society, European Association of Urology, and has lectured and taught surgeons throughout the world. He is an Assistant Editor for the Journal of Urology and serves on the editorial board of Nature Reviews Urology.
