Martha Carlson, M.D., Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Neurology at the University of Michigan, Mott Children’s Hospital. She is a physician-scientist and has been the State of Michigan’s X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD) Medical Director since 2017. In this role, she coordinates care with the Newborn Screening State Lab, the Technical Advisory Committee, and the 3 medical centers in Michigan that care for children with X-ALD. Her clinical interests include general pediatric neurology, neurodevelopmental and neurogenetic conditions, movement disorders, and stroke. She is active in education of medical students and adult and child neurology residents and receives outstanding teaching evaluations.
Dr. Carlson completed undergraduate studies and an MD - PhD program in Pharmacology at the University of Michigan. Her graduate doctoral thesis focused on the role of glutamatergic neurotransmission (purification of the synaptic vesicle glutamate transport system) in diverse neurological conditions. She completed child neurology training at the University of Michigan, post-doctoral research training at the University of Michigan with Drs. Anne Young and Ted Ueda, as well as Dr. Eric Kandel at Columbia University. She obtained her initial expertise on X-ALD at the Kennedy Krieger Institute with Drs. Hugo Moser and Gerald Raymond. She joined the University of Michigan faculty in 2000, and she has recently been awarded the distinguished Evan Newport HOPE Award (2021) for exceptional commitment to patient and family centered care. She has been a member of the Child Neurology Society for 25 years.
