Dr. Ambani is a native mid-Michigander, having grown up in Jackson, MI. After receiving his undergraduate degree from Harvard University, he obtained his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He subsequently completed his Urology residency at the University of Michigan, and then stayed on to complete a fellowship in Laparoscopy, Robotics, and Stone Surgery. He joined the Endourology Division in the University of Michigan Health System Department of Urology. His clinical interests include minimally-invasive surgery of the kidney and ureter, including ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction, ureteral scarring/injury, complex ureteral reconstruction using small incisions, and kidney stone surgery. He performs a high volume of surgery to repair UPJ obstruction and complex ureteral strictures from scarring due to surgical history or stone disease. Dr. Ambani understands that patients with ureteral disease have faced multiple unexpected issues, and approached this challenging clinical with compassion and understanding. Based on his clinical experience, he is a nationally recognized expert in this field and has multiple publications investigating the optimal approach to surgical repair of ureteral disease. He serves as the head of the University of Michigan Ureteral Reconstruction Working Group, which aims to improve the care of patients who require ureteral reconstruction surgery through clinical collaboration and research. Based on this work, he has a shared appointment in the Division of Neurourology and Pelvic Reconstruction within the Department of Urology.
Dr. Ambani also serves as the Associate Residency Program Director for the Department of Urology and the Surgical Director of the University Hospital Operating Rooms.
