Steven R. Buchman is a professor of surgery in the Section of Plastic Surgery and a professor of neurosurgery at the University of Michigan Medical School. He attended undergraduate school at Columbia University in New York City as a Macy Scholar and medical school at the Medical College of Virginia, where he won the A.H. Robins Medical Scholarship for Outstanding Academic Achievement. He continued on to train in General and Plastic Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania where he won the Dr. William Y. Inouye Award for Excellence in teaching before completing a craniofacial fellowship at UCLA. He leads the Craniofacial Research Laboratory, which is developing novel therapeutic approaches to bone regeneration.

    Research Overview

The work in my laboratory has built a foundation of translational research to provide both the analytical and operational basis for the work that this proposed grant would support. Specifically, I have created and gradually enhanced novel experimental irradiated murine mandibular models of fracture repair and non-vascularized bone grafting designed to elucidate the tissue engineering principles that will enable novel treatment paradigms targeted at reconstructing skeletal deficits in both normal and irradiated bone. I have identified specific metrics of diminished bone healing secondary to radiation and have then been able to utilize a variety of cell based and pharmaco-therapeutic strategies to substantially mitigate the attendant damage. My focus is to successfully take the discoveries that I am able to make at the scientific bench and bring them to the actual bedside to help both myself and my fellow physicians to treat our patients. I have also been a professor and active surgical scientist for over 25 years at the University
    of Michigan.
