    • About

    Dr. Andrew Hashikawa is a fellowship-trained pediatric emergency medicine physician and epidemiologist. He serves as one of the Michigan Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)’s Early Childhood Champions and as co-associate director of the Engagement and Education Core at the University of Michigan Concussion Center. His research focuses on the health and safety of children in early care and education settings and summer camps. Dr. Hashikawa founded the Michigan Child Care Related Infectious Surveillance Program (MCRISP.org), which monitors infectious diseases in child care settings. He also chairs the PediaLink Editorial Board and has helped develop online training courses for child care providers through the AAP’s PediaLink e-learning platform. In addition, he has contributed to two massive open online courses (MOOCs): one on pediatric injury prevention through edX and another on hearing loss in children through Coursera. Dr. Hashikawa also co-founded Pop-up Safety Town, a community-based injury prevention education initiative that engages preschool-aged children and their families in communities experiencing significant health disparities.

    U-M’s Pop-Up Safety Town Teaches Injury Prevention and Helps Keep Kids Out of the ER

    Pop-Up Safety Town, a community outreach initiative by the University of Michigan’s Department of Emergency Medicine in partnership with the U-M Concussion Center, brings free, hands-on injury prevention education to underserved communities across Michigan. Designed for children ages three to six, the program teaches vital safety skills, like helmet use, medication safety, and pedestrian awareness, through interactive events and classroom kits. By engaging families directly in schools and community spaces, and expanding through partnerships and national scaling efforts, the initiative aims to reduce preventable childhood injuries and keep kids out of the emergency room.
