The Board of Regents has approved the appointment of Stephan F. Taylor, M.D., as interim chair of the Department of Psychiatry in the Medical School, effective October 1.

Gretchen A. Piatt, Ph.D., MPH, has been appointed chair of the Department of Learning Health Sciences (DLHS) in the Medical School, effective September 1. The provost provided interim approval of her appointment, and it will be reported at the September Board of Regents meeting.

Sarah Hartley, MD, MHPE, is a clinical professor of internal medicine and associate residency program director at the University of Michigan Medical School.

A series of swap events, and a new swap shop now open on Central Campus, have led to the collection and exchange of hundreds of items, which often are acquired by labs to realize costs savings in their areas. They also support UMMS and U-M waste-reduction goals, which are part of an overall sustainability strategy. Most of the items now go to labs that need them, rather than to a landfill

Lyle C. Roll Professor Akbar K. Waljee, M.D., from the departments of Learning Health Sciences and Internal Medicine, has been appointed assistant dean for global health research in the Medical School

The Board of Regents approved the appointments July 18 for Professor of Molecular and Integrative Physiology Roger D. Cone, Ph.D., and Professor of Radiology and Biomedical Engineering Jeffrey A. Fessler, Ph.D., to one of U-M’s most prestigious honors: the Distinguished University Professorship (DUP).

Amy Kilbourne, PhD, MPH, Associate Chair for Research and Professor of Learning Health Sciences at U-M Medical School has been appointed Executive Director of Health Systems Research for the U.S.  Department of Veterans Affairs Health System, effective June 30, 2024.

The 2024-25 Doximity Residency Navigator has been released. It shows that U-M has six top 5 medical education programs, with nine more in the top 10 and another nine in the top 25.

The Medical School community welcomed 171 members of the incoming Class of 2024 during the 28th annual White Coat Ceremony on July 21 at Hill Audtorium.

Helen Morgan, M.D., of Michigan Medicine, authored a study that surveyed obstetric and gynecology residents to determine who feels prepared for the transition from medical school to residency.

A new teaching tool, Radar, is helping teams improve their shared decision-making skills in educational and patient settings. Innovator Vitaliy Popov is receiving funding and support through the RISE Innovation Development Program. The project was originally funded through the Center for Interprofessional Education.

A medical student and surgery faculty member studied the longevity of depression symptoms developed by first-year resident trainees. With their findings now published, they hope to use this data to destigmatize conversations about physician mental health and pave the way for better cultural and institutional support.

For 171 medical students who will be cloaked at the White Coat Ceremony on July 21, their journey will begin when they cross the stage in Hill Auditorium. This time on stage and communing with their classmates, deans, faculty and staff, will cap a day of celebration that welcomes the incoming Class of 2024 to the profession, to the community, and to the University of Michigan Medical School.
