Gilbert S. Omenn, M.D., Ph.D., and his wife, Martha A. Darling, have made a generous gift of $25 million to the Department of Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics (DCMB) within the University of Michigan Medical School.

Adelaide Tovar, Ph.D., was awarded an NIH Maximizing Opportunities for Scientific and Academic Independent Careers (MOSAIC) K99/R00, a specialized career transition program intended for postdocs who are from underrepresented backgrounds and/or have demonstrated a commitment to increasing inclusivity and equity in the scientific workforce.

DATA is calling for trainee posters that apply computational methods, data science solutions, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) techniques to solve problems in health care, pharmacy, chemistry, and biomedical engineering, in particular in the areas of drug design, drug repositioning, and treatment assessment.

This summer and into the fall, DCMB is hosting three international students for up to six months each. They come from China, France and Korea, eager to learn and expand their education and experience through an extended visit at the University of Michigan (U-M) and DCMB.

Dr. Wing will guest lecture in BIOINF 575, BIOINF 527, and BIOINF 500 while providing departmental workshops across campus to brief faculty and students on Generative AI tools in the classroom. In Winter 2025, he will lecture for BIOINF 529.

Joshua Welch, Ph.D., an associate professor in the Department of Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics (DCMB) was awarded a Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) grant for his project titled: “Atlas-scale Hierarchical Identification of Cell Types and Functions.”

Arvind Rao, Ph.D., an associate professor in the departments of Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics (DCMB), Radiation Oncology and Biostatics, was selected to receive a Global REACH Partnership Development grant. His proposal is titled: “Towards development of a collaborative partnership for biomedical data science training and research between CSIR India and University of Michigan India platform.”

Friday, June 21, 2024, D. Ford Hannum, Ph.D., defended his dissertation titled “Applications of emerging transcriptomic technologies and methods to gain insight into the human reproductive system."
