Parking
Parking is available at the University of Michigan Thayer Street and Fletcher Street structures.

Handicapped Accessibility
Handicapped parking is available on Thayer Street as well as in both U-M parking structures. The handicapped entrance to Hill Auditorium is located on Thayer Street. Wheelchair and easy access seating are available in the back of the auditorium.

  • Animals (except service animals for persons with a disability)

  • Apparel or signage displaying profane or abusive language

  • Containers of any kind (including coolers, thermoses, cups, cans, flasks)

  • Projectiles (including footballs, Frisbees and beach balls)

  • Strollers

  • Video camera, tripods and selfie sticks

  • Umbrellas

  • Weapons

Frequently Asked Questions

How many guests may each student have and are tickets required for this event?
Students are welcome to invite as many guests as they want. However, all guests must have a ticket to attend the ceremony.

Will the ceremony be accessible for the hearing impaired?
An American Sign Language interpreter will be present on stage for the duration of our ceremony.

Will there be a photographer?
Two professional photographers will be present to take photographs of students as they don their white coat and exit the stage. The photographs will be shared with students.

Will the ceremony be live streamed?
Yes, the White Coat Ceremony will be live streamed and recorded. You may view the livestream at: https://youtu.be/lOSfhRnt7D0.

When do students need to arrive at Hill Auditorium and where do they need to go?
Students will need to arrive at 1:15 p.m. and use the Thayer Street entrance. They will be directed to either the lower or the mezzanine lobby to pick up their coats and wait for additional instructions.

How do students order their white coat or exchange it for a different size? 
The order form has been shared directly with the students. Extra coats will be available at the ceremony for the students to exchange for a different size. For additional information, please contact Dawn Bednarski at [email protected] or 734-645-0705.

What is the attire for the ceremony?
Students should wear professional attire and comfortable shoes. Avoid wearing jackets, suit jackets, and short dresses. Suggested attire for guests is business casual. Hill Auditorium is air conditioned, but it can get warm inside.

What additional information about the ceremony should I know?
At the beginning of the ceremony, the students will proceed into the auditorium and sit in the center section. During the ceremony, students will go up on stage in alphabetical order. They present their coat to Michigan Medicine leadership, who will help each student put on the coat. In addition to their coats, students will receive stethoscopes.  

What is the history of the White Coat Ceremony?
This year marks the 28th anniversary that the U-M Medical School has hosted the White Coat Ceremony. We appreciate the support of the Arnold P. Gold Foundation for creating and establishing our White Coat Ceremony, and the Michigan Medicine Alumni Society for sponsoring the event. Learn more about the ceremony’s history.
