Dr. Laura Seewald is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine and a Research Assistant Professor with the Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention at the University of Michigan. She is also an adult emergency medicine physician at Hurley Medical Center in Flint, Michigan. Dr. Seewald was a research fellow with the Firearm Safety Among Children and Teens (FACTS) Consortium and was part of the first cohort of the NIH T32 post-doctoral funded fellows with U-M’s Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention where she concentrated on interventions for high-risk youth populations, including examining parental attitudes towards healthcare provider firearm safety counseling. Her postdoctoral research on firearm injury prevention focused on the development, testing, and implementation of emergency-department-based interventions to decrease firearm violence, youth violence, intimate partner violence, and associated risk behaviors. She is particularly interested in understanding and addressing the most severe intimate partner violence typologies, including firearm behaviors with a long-term goal of reducing intimate partner violence and associated health and social outcomes among minority populations through programs in the emergency department setting.
