Doctoring Coaches assist students in critically reflecting on performance, setting goals and accountability to their commitments. Doctoring Coaches are assigned at the start of M1 year.
Scientific Trunk: Students meet with their Doctoring Coach approximately every week during the Scientific Trunk.
Clinical Trunk: Students meet with their Doctoring Coach approximately once a month during the Clinical Trunk.
Branches: Students meet with their Doctoring Coach five to six times during each of the Branch years.
Students engage with their Path of Excellence Advisor midway through M1 year after they choose to join a Path of Excellence. The Path Advisor facilitates the Capstone for Impact (CFI) project and advises the student on their broader personal and educational development. The Path Advisor may or may not be the CFI mentor.
Scientific Trunk: Students start meeting their Path Advisor halfway through Scientific Trunk once they select a Path of Excellence.
Clinical Trunk: Students meet with their Path Advisor in at least two formal sessions during the Clinical Trunk as well as by appointment, if needed.
Branches: Students meet with their Path Advisor three times in the Branches. They may meet more times if the students selects their Path Advisor as their Capstone for Impact Mentor too.
A Capstone for Impact Mentor guides students in articulation of their CFI goal and completion of the project with a minimum of three meetings. Interactions are student-initiated and led.
Scientific Trunk: Depending on when students choose to start their Capstone for Impact project, meetings with their Capstone Mentor may begin in the Scientific Trunk.
Clinical Trunk: Depending on when students choose to start their Capstone for Impact project, meetings with their Capstone Mentor may begin or continue in the Clinical Trunk.
Branches: Depending on when students choose to start their Capstone for Impact projects, meetings with their Capstone Mentor may begin or continue in the Branches, or may have already concluded.
The Branch Director acts as a resource for any student or advisor within a Branch. They perform holistic reviews of student performance, identify students who are struggling or excelling, and serve as a liaison between students, advisors and the Branches Competency Committee.
Scientific Trunk: Students do not meet with the Branch Director during the Scientific Trunk.
Clinical Trunk: Students do not meet with the Branch Director during the Clinical Trunk.
Branches: Students may request to meet with a Branch Director at any time throughout the Branches. The Branch Director may also request to meet with students as needed.
Each student is assigned to a Branch Advisor prior to the start of the Branch years to help navigate the curriculum and graduation requirements. Branch Advisors touch base with students on a monthly basis to maximize their schedule, track goal-setting and review performance.
Scientific Trunk: Students do not meet with their Branch Advisor during the Scientific Trunk.
Clinical Trunk: Students meet with their Branch Advisor near the end of the Clinical Trunk.
Branches: Students will meet with their Branch Advisor on a monthly basis throughout the Branches.
The Faculty Career Advisor provides advice, guidance and mentoring for career exploration. They have expert knowledge regarding successful specialty match and serve as a resource for students throughout the residency application process. Student-initiated interactions may begin in the Scientific and Clinical Trunks for initial career exploration and increase during the Branches years to solidify career decisions.
Scientific Trunk: Students may meet FCAs through career seminars or mentoring events during the Scientific Trunk. Students are also encouraged to explore the provided FCA list and reach out to FCAs in specialties of interest to establish contact and possible mentorship.
Clinical Trunk: Students may want to set up appointments to meet with their FCA in the Clinical Trunk. The Clinical Trunk is very busy, and there are fewer opportunities to meet with FCAs then, though they remain available for advice and mentorship.
Branches: Students need to have a close relationship with at least one FCA in each specialty of interest during the Branches.
Student Services Counselors serves as a resource for students and provides academic support, personal guidance, crisis management and career advising. They have knowledge of the Medical School's policies and procedures. Students are encouraged to schedule an initial get-acquainted meeting within the first six weeks of school, followed by as-needed meetings. Students who receive an Incomplete by Assessment in any course or who are struggling in any way with the many challenges of medical school (academic, emotional, personal) should meet with their respective Student Services Counselor. Student Services Counselors may cross-cover and work together as a team with the Assistant Dean for Student Services.
Scientific Trunk: Students meet one-on-one at least one time with their Student Services Counselor during the Scientific Trunk.
Clinical Trunk: Students may meet with their Student Services Counselor as needed during office hours in the Clinical Trunk.
Branches: Students may meet with their Student Services Counselor as needed during office hours in the Branches.
The Assistant Dean for Student Services (ADSS) provides guidance, high-level assistance and meaningful engagement on the journey to becoming a physician with expertise in navigating medical school transitions, career decision making, the residency match process, crisis counseling and professionalism. The ADSS, along with the Director of Student Services, oversees the counselors, learning and accessibility services team (including disability accommodation services and tutoring), the financial aid team, registration and scheduling. The ADSS is available to students throughout medical school. Meetings may be initiated by the student or by the Assistant Dean or Competency Committee.
Scientific Trunk: The ADSS is available to meet with students by appointment in the Scientific Trunk.
Clinical Trunk: The ADSS is available to meet with students by appointment in the Clinical Trunk.
Branches: The ADSS is available to meet with students by appointment in the Branches.
Our Learning and Disability Manager is an expert resource available to students anytime throughout the curriculum for improving academic planning, time management, work-life balance and motivation. The Learning and Disability Manager also provides expertise in disability services and advocacy, including appropriate accommodations for didactic and clinical settings as well as for Step exams.
Scientific Trunk: Students are introduced to the Learning and Disability Manager during at the start of the Scientific Trunk. They are available to meet with students anytime in the Scientific Trunk.
