K. Elizabeth Speck, MD, MS, FACS is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Section of Pediatric Surgery. She received her medical degree from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine and then completed her general surgery residency at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. During her general surgery training, she completed an NIH-sponsored Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Pediatric Surgery at UNC. Dr. Speck completed her Pediatric Surgery Fellowship at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 2014 and then joined the faculty at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Dr. Speck is board certified in both general surgery and pediatric surgery and came back to join us as faculty at the University of Michigan in 2017.
Due to her interest in clinical outcomes research, Dr. Speck completed her Master’s degree in Clinical Research Design and Statistical Analysis from the University of Michigan in 2017. She was inducted as a Fellow in the American Pediatric Surgical Association (APSA) and the American College of Surgeons (ACS), and is a member of the Michigan Chapter of the ACS, the Association of Women Surgeons (AWS), the Association for Academic Surgery (AAS), the International Pediatric Endosurgery Group (IPEG), the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), and the University of Michigan's Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation (IHPI).
Dr. Speck's pediatric surgical practice centers around minimally invasive colorectal and thoracic surgery. She serves as the Director of Pediatric Colorectal Surgery and is dedicated to care for the most complex diseases such as anorectal malformations, Hirschsprung disease, and disorders of sexual differentiation, as well as common issues such as chronic constipation and pilonidal disease. To address the needs of this latter, very high-volume and complex patient population, she developed and leads a thriving Pediatric Pilonidal Disease Clinical Program. She also has a focus in implementation science and clinical quality improvement, serving on the Division's Quality and Peer Review Committee. In her role as the Director of Network Operations, she has led efforts to standardize and optimize high-quality care across the multiple hospitals for which our division provides pediatric surgical care.
